The Stop Climate Chaos Scotland (SCCS) coalition has today tentatively welcomed the Scottish Government’s announcement of an increase to the budget for cycling initiatives.
Tom Ballantine, Chair of Stop Climate Chaos Scotland said:
“A quarter of Scotland’s greenhouse gas emissions come from the transport sector. We need to significantly reduce emissions from transport if our country is to be taken seriously on the international stage as a ‘world-leader’ on climate change.
Stop Climate Chaos Scotland had called for the active travel budget to be doubled.
The increase in funding announced today looks like a step in the right direction, though we await further details. This must be reliable, year-on-year, long-term funding which signals continued commitment to cycling and walking.
Making sustainable transport a better and easy option for people can drive down emissions in a cost-effective way, which has health and other benefits for people across the country.”
The Stop Climate Chaos Scotland (SCCS) coalition is the largest coalition ever formed in Scotland. We bring together a diverse range of organisations – including student and trade unions, international development and environment organisations, community and faith groups – to work together on climate change.
