Your suggestions for climate new year’s resolutions in 2024

We launched our new year’s climate resolutions campaign at the COP28 Global Day of Action on 9th December in Edinburgh, and have gathered hundreds of suggestions from people across Scotland for new year’s climate resolutions for party leaders to commit to.

We are running out of time tackle the climate and nature emergencies and to mitigate the effects of climate change and this will have vast detrimental effects for our society.

Scotland Just Transition and climate change plans are hugely inadequate given the interrelated crises we face. The STUC has shown how ScotGov could raise £3.7bn more in tax revenue particularly through reforming the outdated council tax, and the ScotWind auction could have raised billions more still. These extra resources could then be invested in public services and infrastructure, mass home insulation, municipal public energy companies and nature restoration.

In the face of increasing global temperatures and rising sea levels, loss of wildlife habitat and devastating wildfires governments must stop kicking the ball of endless promises to take action, and get on with doing it!!

Fiona

We must act now for the sake of our children and grandchildren. What kind of world do we want to leave for them?

Jane

I fully support the New Year's resolutions and statements below for Scotland's sake and my five grandchildren in particular.

We are entering a scary time, where the future is more uncertain than ever. Please can we put our differences aside and follow the scientific consensus on the climate crisis. We can improve the environment we live in and the society we are part of. It is time.

Jamie

Millions of the most vulnerable people In the world are already disproportionately affected by the climate emergency. As a country that has benefitted so much from our colonial past and taking account of our role in emitting dangerous levels of CO2, we have a duty to play a leadership role in compensating these countries for their loss and the damage industrialised countries continue to cause

Total commitment is now required. No more delays. No more watering down. No more moving the goal posts!
